Introduction

Razer, as many of you will know from some of our previous reviews, is a gaming company that specialises in PC accessories. But with the recent rise of Mac gaming, they have strived to make many of their products Mac compatible, proudly displaying their “Mac + PC” badge on many of their mini-websites. But on some of those mini-websites you won’t see such a badge, and one such site is that of the Megalodon. But if Razer aren’t even claiming Mac compatibilty, then why review the product on Apple-Review? Well, even without full support or even a full feature list, the Megalodon is still a fantastic set of headphones.

Packaging

It seems that every Razer product we are lucky enough to get a look at is packaged in even more extravagant and impressive packaging than the last. And the Megalodon is no exception. After removing a thin carboard sheeth, you are greeted with a thick cardboard box emblazened with the impressive Razer logo. By pulling on the fabric tongue that extrudes from the box, you can easily open the lid with a satisfactory force required to overcome the airtight seal. What greets you as you finally reach the inside of the box is a tough carry case, with the Megalodon's loaded inside. With the Megalodon, Razer has yet again treated it's buyers to a real treat in the unboxing experience, with real class and sophistacation eminating from the great packaging design.

Design

Living up to Razer's reputation for product design is not easy, but the Megalodon doesn't disappoint with masses of glossy black plastic and glowing blue accent that is sure to please any gamer or Razer fan. Unlike many hardcore gaming accessories however, the Megalodon is not inaccessible to casual users, with its soft curves and textures along with its extraordinary comfort allowing it to appeal to all members of the headphone market. The control box is a gamer's dream, with more light up buttons and read-outs than an A380 cockpit, and its incredible sound adjustment will please even the most die hard audiophiles.

Sound Quality + Control

Like all Razer products, when it comes to the actual performance level, the Megalodon does not compromise. The Megalodon's don't feature active noise cancellation, but their large size means that when they are worn, they effectively block out nearly all surrounding noise. But the real stand-out performance comes when the music starts playing, the Megalodons feature several drivers in each ear-cup that provide a rich and vivid sound. When you start to play with the control box though, the Megalodon really does come to life. I often found myself increasing the bass while listening to music, only to adjust it again when watching Movies or TV Shows. While it requires a small learning curve, it leads to a truly customizable and enjoyable listening experience.

Mac Compatibility

As we briefly mentioned in the introduction, the Megalodon does not even claim Mac combatibility, and for good reason, with one of the key selling points (at least for PC-using buyers) is the surround sound feature. However, even though the Megalodon can't play surround sound through your mac, it is still possible to emulate it through the control box, though the quality is far from perfect and we rarely used it during testing. But other than surround sound, the Megalodon works near faultlessly on a Mac, being able to easily play any music source through USB with little configuration (simply select it in System Preferences as the audio output).

Final Thoughts

The Megalodon is a really great gaming product. It offers great design with customizable and near impecable sound quality through a USB input, all packaged in a wonderful and useful travel container. While Mac users will miss out on the surround sound experience, the Megalodon's still offer a great listening tool, with incredible customization features all for a very reasonable price. Overall, a great buy for those in the gaming headset market, and an even better one for those with both a PC and Mac.
